There was entertainment for young and old at the Dannevirke A&P Show February 3-4.
Vet Services had organised the always popular pet zoo which featured sheep (Sooty and Sweep), a miniature horse (Bella), two calves (Mighty and Minnie Mouse), a donkey (Nelson), a goat (Manu), two rabbits (Left and Right) numerous guinea pigs, turtles, chickens, dogs and quail.
The SPCA had the cutest kittens with unusual colours and definitely "attitude".
Next door the Tararua Bird Club had exotic birds for display and sale.
Lulu the Clown circulated the showgrounds followed by a crowd of children wanting free balloon animals and swords.
From the stage the Dannevirke Musos pumped out a harmonious sound from mid-morning to mid-afternoon with great guests like Molly Pawson.
Major attraction this year was the Performing Ponies and Dogs show from Ormondville.
These Shetland ponies, Prince, 25 years old, Prince, 6, and Jag, 6 months, were accompanied by a fox terrier called Snip and a poodle named Ricky.
Between them they entertained the crowds with clever tricks including Snip walking the high wire, Prince pushing a pram with Snip in it, Candy doing waltzes around the ring and Ricky taking his teddy for a walk in a pushchair.
We may have seen the last of them. Owner Jim Banks is in his mid-70s and contemplating retirement after two generations of his family in circus-type entertainment.
The terrier racing attracted the biggest crowd, filling the grandstand and overflowing.
About 16 dogs took part, one participant more interested in chasing another than the moving cloth.
Winner Mia from Masterton gained her speed from chasing rabbits and wild turkeys, according to her owner.
With Mahoney Entertainment providing excitement for teenagers on Friday night, pretty much every age group was catered for at the Dannevirke A&P Show.
