A programme that helps families adopt retired racing greyhounds is anticipating its 2000th placement before Christmas.
Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) programme director, Noel Brown, says the 2000th adoption should occur in the next three to four weeks.
"We have kennels in Levin, Auckland and Christchurch all vying to find that landmark family," he said.
GAP launched in May 2006. It found homes for 75 dogs in its first year, but now places around 300 retired racing greyhounds each year.
Mr Brown says his ultimate aim is to see the number of dogs retired to Kiwi homes each year increased to 500 by 2018.
Greyhounds make great family pets. They are gentle, child-friendly dogs that don't smell and don't bark much.
"They make a great loyal mate because they are laid-back and always want to be around you," Mr Brown said.
Most of the dogs GAP places go to families with children.
Adoption will be free for the family that takes the 2000th placement. They will also receive a free lead, coat and a bag of grain-free food for their new pet.
The adoption fee is normally $380, which covers a thorough inspection of both the animal and the potential owner's home.
GAP ensures properties are fully fenced, and all dogs receive a health check, vaccinations, de-sexing, micro-chipping and temperament assessment, including how they interact with cats and small dogs, before being matched to their new families.
"People are always surprised to learn that more than half our greyhounds share homes with cats and smaller dogs," mr Brown said.
"Greyhounds are a fantastic addition to a home."
