A local ingredients creator, a local expert maker, a local factory and local ingredients - the perfect recipe for something very special to help celebrate the 90th birthday of Rush Munro's ice creams.
And yesterday the unique new ice cream from the equally unique Hawke's Bay ice cream maker started coming out of the churn with factory manager Graham Copp giving it the thumbs up.
"It tastes very good," he said.
"We have made a mixed berry before but I think this is better."
As part of the company's 90th birthday celebrations a competition was staged through The Hits radio station which asked for people to send in what they reckoned would be a great tasting ice cream to mark a special occasion.
Many took up the challenge and for Hastings woman Yvette May her choice of three varieties of berries and white chocolate got the eventual nod.
She had been inspired by her first taste of one of the new season strawberries and figured they, along with other fresh local berries and a spot of chocolate could do the tasty job.
"I love Rush Munro's and I love that they use local ingredients where possible - we are living in the fruit bowl of New Zealand so why not make the most of it."
When news of her successful entry was announced she was quick to call her "ice cream obsessed husband" to notify him of the win.
"He was very excited to hear we have $200 worth of Rush Munro's ice cream to chomp through - he's a big fan."
Mrs May said she wanted to come up with something uniquely Hawke's Bay with heaps of different berries from within the region, which appealed to Mr Copp who said "because this is what Rush Munro's is all about".
"It was great to see so many inventive entries coming through, but I am glad to be working on something with a local twist where we can use local ingredients," he said.
"We have close relationships with local suppliers and it's good to have everyone involved in our celebration flavour."
So, after the recipe idea got the winning nod he called on the Strawberry Patch, Bay Blueberries and the Hanna Berry Farm for some of their boysenberries.
Then got to work.
"It is all about taste - you do it by taste," he said.
A small portion of one ingredient, then a portion of another and another, and just tweak the amounts with the ice cream mix.
"It didn't take too long - we share it around and we all try it."
The result is 120 litres of what is effectively a Rush Munro's one-off - "well at this stage it is".
Mr Copp has been steering the creation of the company's ice-creams, which use just six ingredients across the board, for nearly 14 years.
"I got into it by accident," he said.
"I came here to help put labels on...and I just stayed."
He said he enjoyed the challenge of creating ice creams from completely natural ingredients, and while synthetics made things easier and cheaper that was not the point of it.
"Has to be natural".
The first to put the celebration flavour to the test will be Room 7 at St Josephs School in Hastings today after teacher Madelyn Clement won a class shout, also through The Hits.
And a party will be held at the Garden Parlour this Saturday to celebrate the 90 years with fun activities and competitions planned, as well as discounted ice creams.
