Marina Erakovic has made a good start to the US$740,000 WTA tennis event in Carlsbad, California, with a straight-sets 6-4 6-0 victory over Britain's Anne Keothavong.

The Kiw No 1, who is ranked 47 in the world, is fresh from winning her sixth WTA doubles title last week at Stanford and won this morning's match against the 76th ranked Keothavong in 78 minutes.

Erakovic was down a break in the first set and trailed 4-2 but reeled off the next four games to take the initiative. Keothavong's serve fell apart - she served 10 double faults - and Erakovic raced through the the second set as Keothavong struggled to find any rhythm.

Erakovic will take on second seeded Slovakian Dominka Cibulkova, who is ranked 14 in the world, in the second round.

At the completion of Carlsbad, Erakovic will return to London for the Olympics.
