Homeland creator Alex Gansa said there will be at least two more seasons of the political thriller - but only if star actress Claire Danes is involved.
"I think it will certainly go for six seasons, probably for seven," Gansa told Fox.
"But there is no show without Claire Danes and if she decides that she's had enough, then we've all had enough.
"She is really the heart and centre of Homeland."
Danes plays CIA agent Carrie Mathison who in season five leaves her government role to work for a private contractor.
"She's not only just out of the intelligence agency, she's actively working against the people who she used to be employed by," said Gansa.
"She carries the show on her shoulders and she does it in such a graceful and powerful way."
Meanwhile, Gansa is he's excited for the return of science fiction drama The X-Files.
Gansa was a key writer during the early seasons of the original The X-Files series.
"I cannot wait. Mulder and Scully are like part of my family, so I'm really, really curious to see what the show is going to look like," Gansa told Fox.
"It's going to be very exciting and interesting."
Unfortunately, however, Gansa said he won't be involved in the series limited return.
"I am so sorry that I was too busy to be involved," he said.
