The teenager killed in when the ute he was driving crashed into a Tauranga house has been named.
He was Herewini Gates, 16. Police released his name this afternoon and extended their sympathies to his family and friends.
The Serious Crash Unit is still investigating the collision, which happened about 1am on Monday.
Herewini had been travelling in a ute with a passenger when it crashed through an Otumoetai property, waking the elderly residents inside and their neighbours.
David and Sylvia Lawrence said the impact of the crash was such that Mrs Lawrence dived for cover, thinking it was an earthquake.
Later that morning they also extended their sympathies to Herewini's family.
"I think of his parents this morning, what they'll be waking up to ... they will be grieving," Mr Lawrence said.
