Motorsport: Vintage cars on display at Speedway

By Ilona Hanne

The Taranaki Historic Speedway Club had a display of vintage cars on Saturday night at the Stratford Speedway.

Members took them on to the track for a demonstration, giving spectators the chance to see them running. On the Sunday, the cars were again on the track for a club meeting, an event that happens three or four times a year.

Eric Beardmore, a member of the club, says the track day is not a race "although it could be called a spirited demonstration".

Eric says that the club is always looking for new members, "anyone with an interest, old drivers, people who own an old speedway car, or just are interested".

"The mortality rate of speedway cars is pretty high," Eric points out, with most of them are sent to the junk yard rather than restored at the end of their racing careers.
