The youngsters, with the help of some volunteers and parents, worked on building trap boxes to be placed around a scrubby gully area which is home to some toutowai.
Last Thursday the boxes were made and on Friday they were placed in the gully.
Principal Chris Mattock says one toutowai was quick to pop over and investigate the new arrivals.
Pupils are now waiting to hear if they have been successful in gaining a grant which will help fund them to build more traps, as they would like to place some in a nearby area of bush.
That area, says Chris, has been identified as being a roost site for pekapeka (long-tail bats) as well as being home to kiwi.
The traps built last week used materials donated by ITM Stratford and Chris says they are very grateful for the donation.
Next term, he says, the pupils will continue with their trapping operation and use the project as a springboard into plenty of literacy and statistics learning in the classroom as well.
