Amy - always ready to help out

Amy Luckhurst is a well-rounded and well-grounded young woman. Having been involved in everything from fundraising to library and cadets earned her Stratford High's coveted Rodbeen Family trophy for best allround student.

"I just did it to help where I can and fill a position where it was needed. Most of what got me the award is stuff I did just because it needed doing. I had never thought I would be rewarded for just doing what I can to help others."

Some of the many things she has been involved in include fundraising for events such as Relay For Life, sport touring teams, the school's New Caledonia exchange, and Stage Challenge.

"Doing fundraising doesn't necessarily mean I actually went on the trips and did the activities, I just helped out wherever I was needed. I love to volunteer for things - sometimes to the point where it drives my mother mad. If I had a dollar for every time she's warned me to not get too involved and to focus on my schoolwork, I would surely by now have enough money to pay for university."

She says she jumped in at any opportunity to participate in an activity at school.

This year she has been involved in peer support - a programme to help the juniors integrate into high school - and peer reading, an initiative that pairs younger students with Year 13s in an effort to get them reading.

"Some things I have done over long periods include being an active member of 48 Squadron Air Training Corps, helping out at school discos, and working as a student librarian during lunch times and intervals."

She says if there is a gap to fill, she is the type of person who strives to fill it.

"This attitude is probably what got me the award. I am very grateful to those who nominated me, and to everyone who has encouraged me in my endeavours. Being the person I am, I will probably end up volunteering some more when I'm at university in Otago next year."
