St Mary's fabric technology students have designed and created masterpieces for the Fashion Art Awards, with Year 10 student Kylie Collins winning the Student Bizarre category.
Titled "Ping Pong Prima Donna" Kylie's bra was constructed with ping pong balls, table tennis net and pearls. Erin Tuaine and Amy Jensen-Schmidt's (both Year 11 students) entry in the Recycled Art category was made from electronic components and called "Tech this Out".
Year 10 student Alyx Devlin entered "Purple Rain" made out of umbrellas in the Off the Wall section. The Year 10 team of Rebecca Trethewey, Georgina Stieller and Bridgit Mestrom's creation "Caged Beauty" was made from netting, leaves, fabric and cardboard. Teacher Elizabeth Higgs entered "Denim Deconstruction" in the Recycled Art category and "Art Deco", a sculptured, quilted satin bra in the Bizarre Bra section.
"The girls' ideas have involved a lot of careful planning and three-dimensional thinking," she said.
"It has been a real challenge getting umbrellas to co-operate and ping pong balls painstakingly attached to a bizarre bra. The girls took their creative ideas beyond dressmaking fabrics into crepe paper, chicken mesh, table tennis netting and computer keyboards with stunning results."
