Auckland City is hoping for a smooth passage with resource consents for the new Britomart project so it can get on and build the downtown transport terminal.
The council has applied to the Auckland Regional Council for a resource consent to remove about 165,000 cu m during excavation of the 1.8ha site and another consent to divert groundwater during the digging.
The resource consent process has started before the council firms up what to build in the way of a terminal at the foot of Queen St.
Mayor Christine Fletcher said running the consent process parallel with a design competition for the Waitemata waterfront development would allow building to start quickly once a design was approved. The consents were broad enough to keep options open.
It took 26 months for the previous Britomart scheme, scrapped by the council last November, to obtain resource consents.
The council has been talking to affected parties in a bid to prevent a repeat of the process being dragged through the Environment Court.
Submissions on the new resource consents close on August 18.
