Neighbours could only watch in horror as a woman trapped on the balcony of her New Lynn home screamed for help, while smoke from a fire downstairs swirled around her last night.
She was rescued by firefighters, who climbed up to her using ladders and carried her to safety.
The woman - known as Dawn - burst into tears as she was hugged by a neighbour.
The mid-evening blaze, which affected two of the four flats in the Orcades Place block, is being treated as suspicious.
Police cordoned off the flats and half of the cul-de-sac before talking to neighbours about an alleged fight between residents in the flats.
Neighbours said that they heard a man and a woman yelling outside the flats, before hearing glass smash inside.
Henderson police were speaking to two people last night about the incident.
