The Chiefs scored a surprising 19-7 win over the Hurricanes to kick off new coach Ian Foster's reign in style in Hamilton tonight.
The Chiefs relied on aggressive defence and the goalkicking of first five eighths Glen Jackson to score a first up victory in the Super 12.
The Hurricanes had the best of the first half but only led 7-6 at the break.
Their only points came from a penalty try in the 16th minute after referee Steve Walsh decided lock Dave Duly had pulled down a maul close to the goal line.
The Hurricanes continually looked like breaking through but the Chiefs hung on in defence and were ultimately helped by a poor goalkicking performance from Hurricanes first five eighths Riki Flutey who slotted only one from five attempts.
The decisive moment in the match came in the 66th minute when replacement Chiefs forward Sione Lauaki, recruited from Auckland on the draft, fired over from a ruck to give the Chiefs a 19-7 lead they held until fulltime.
Chiefs 19 (Sione Lauaki try; Glen Jackson 4 pen, 1 con)
Hurricanes 7 (Penalty try, Riki Flutey 1 con)
