Canterbury greyhound trainer John McInerney has created a new record for wins in a season.
When Kerchak won at Manukau on Thursday night, he gave McInerney win 241 for the season.
Later in the programme, Power Within led throughout to win the $5000 Auckland Classic and record win No 242 for the trainer.
The previous record was 240 set in the 2000-01 season by fellow Cantabrian Craig Roberts.
McInerney, a former Southlander, almost brought up the record on his former home track at Ascot Park in Invercargill earlier in the day. He produced four wins there to draw level with the record but was denied with two close second placings in later races.
"We've got a good team of staff at home and that's a major thing," McInerney said.
"Good dogs help of course, but you need good people to train them."
McInerney rated Cecilia Lloyd's win in the Adelaide-Christchurch Sister City Cup in South Australia and the kennel's four group one winners to date this season as highlights.
With so much of the 2002-03 term remaining (the greyhound season finishes on June 30) the kennel's target of 300 wins looks a formality.
