The Wellington Phoenix have refuted suggestions they are about to hire Stuart Pearce as their new head coach.

The Adelaide Age has reported through English sources that the Phoenix have put an offer to the former England international.

But Phoenix General Manager David Dome has told Newstalk ZB the club has never even spoken to Pearce, let alone made him an offer.

Dome said they received a CV from Pearce's representatives, but it was one of dozens that arrived when the coaching vacancy was announced.

He said the club's Football Committee discussed Pearce's application and decided against pursuing it further.

Incumbent coaches Des Buckingham and Chris Greenacre were interviewed individually last week for the head coaching role.

It's believed the Phoenix are also in discussions with up to four other candidates.

They expect to make a decision before the end of May.
