Indongo beats Burns to capture WBA super-lightweight title

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) " Namibia's Julius Indongo captured the WBA super-lightweight title by beating Scottish fighter Ricky Burns on points Saturday in just his second professional bout outside his home country.

Burns, a three-weight world champion, was on the defensive for much of the night against Indongo, who improved his record to 22-0.

Indongo was little known outside Namibia until December, when he stunned Russia's Eduard Troyanovsky in less than a minute in Moscow to win the IBF and IBO super-lightweight titles.

He was declared the victor Saturday on all three scorecards, 120-108, 118-110 and 116-112.

Burns (41-6-1, 14 KOs) was on the back foot from the start as the southpaw Indongo came out swinging with powerful left hooks in the early rounds.

The Scottish fighter came back midway through the bout, however, and landed a couple of good combinations in the seventh round as Indongo appeared to tire.

But the Namibian responded in the eighth round by landing some strong right jabs as Burns failed to put enough pressure on his opponent. The Scot slipped and fell to the mat in the final round, all but ending his title defense.

Burns became Scotland's first three-weight world champion last May when he beat Michele Di Rocco for the vacant WBA super-lightweight title.
