AP Source: Panthers fire coach Gerard Gallant

The Florida Panthers NHL franchise has fired coach Gerard Gallant, according to a person familiar with the decision.

The move was made Sunday night after the Panthers' 3-2 loss at Carolina. The Panthers fell to 11-10-1 through 22 games and sit 10th in the Eastern Conference.

Tom Rowe, who was promoted to general manager before the season, will assume the coaching duties according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the moves.

Florida next plays Tuesday night in Chicago, the second game of a six-game trip for the reigning Atlantic Division champions. Gallant " a coach of the year finalist last season " was 96-65-25 in parts of three seasons with the Panthers.

SportsNet first reported the firing.
