Russian clubs fined after fans throw flares at each other

MOSCOW (AP) " Russian champion CSKA Moscow and league leader Spartak Moscow have been fined a total of 990,000 rubles ($15,500) after their fans threw flares at each other during a match.

Fans threw flares into areas of the stadium packed with opposition supporters and filled the stadium with smoke during Spartak's 3-1 win over CSKA on Saturday.

The unrest briefly caused the game to be suspended as the smoke cleared. There were no reports of injuries. There were also reports of clashes between rival fans traveling to the stadium.

The Russian Football Union said Wednesday in a statement that it had fined each club 300,000 ($4,700) for the flares, plus 150,000 rubles ($2,350) apiece for fans burning opposition merchandise, plus smaller fines for offensive chants.
