Ali survives 5 reviews, England 173-5 vs Bangladesh at tea

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh (AP) " Moeen Ali survived five video reviews for leg before wicket on his way to helping England reach 173-5 at tea on the opening day of the first test against Bangladesh on Thursday.

Ali was on 61, with Jonny Bairstow not out on 26, after the pair added 67. The unbroken sixth-wicket partnership stabilized England after the tourists were reduced to 21-3.

On a turning wicket, Ali survived twice in the first over after lunch. But Bangladesh managed to get the prized wicket of Joe Root, who edged teenage off-spinner Mehedi Hasan to first slip on 40. Root hit five fours in 49 balls.

Ben Stokes (18) went on the attack but an unplayable ball from Shakib Al Hasan dismantled his stumps to leave England in trouble at 106-5.

Hasan claimed 3-43, while Shakib ended the session with 2-45.

Earlier, England was 81-3 at lunch. Hasan claimed his first test wicket when he bowled England opener Ben Duckett for 14 then collected a second in his next over when he trapped Gary Ballance leg before wicket for one, getting the verdict on appeal.

England lost 3-3 in 13 balls with opener Alastair Cook also departing cheaply for just four.

The England skipper, playing in a record 134th test, tried to sweep a turning delivery and dragged the ball back on to his stumps.

England won the toss and elected to bat first.
