Colorado goes top, eliminates San Jose from contention

COMMERCE CITY, Colorado (AP) " Colorado's Kevin Doyle scored twice to lead the Rapids over San Jose 2-1 on Thursday, taking the MLS overall lead and eliminatiing the Earthquakes from playoff contention.

Colorado won its third in a row to surpass Dallas in the standings. The Rapids visit Portland on Saturday and host Houston to finish the season the following week.

Doyle opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a diving header to finish Marc Burch's cross.

San Jose talisman Chris Wondolowski equalized with a penalty in the 57th.

Doyle netted his own spot kick in the 73rd for what proved to be the winning goal.

It was the Rapids' first victory over San Jose since 2011.

Columbus was also eliminated from playoff contention after a 2-2 draw at lowly Chicago.

Needing a win to stay alive, Columbus went ahead when Adam Jahn scored following a run from the right wing in the 13th minute.

That lead held until Crew defender Michael Parkhurt accidentally put a Chicago cross into his own net in the 53rd, and the Fire went ahead just for minutes later through Michael de Leeuw.

Jahn capped the scoring with a volley in the 80th minute.
