The New Zealand men's hockey team faces a major rebuilding program following the retirements of a couple of stalwarts.

Ryan Archibald and Bradley Shaw have called it quits following the Rio Olympic campaign.

Coach Colin Batch has extended his contract for another four years through to the Tokyo Olympics.

Batch says if they're going to be consistently performing at world tournaments they need to build on the depth of talent nationally.

He says to do that they need to keep producing younger players coming through the system who can put pressure on the current crop of players.
