SUNDERLAND, England (AP) " Uruguay striker Cristhian Stuani marked his first appearance in the Premier League with two goals to guide Middlesbrough to a 2-1 win at northeast rival Sunderland on Sunday.
Stuani smashed a 25-meter shot into the top corner in the 13th minute, then slotted home from close range off Alvaro Negredo's squared pass to finish off a flowing team move in the 45th.
Patrick van Aanholt pulled a goal back in the 71st for Sunderland, which has lost its opening two games of the season under recently hired manager David Moyes and saw captain John O'Shea come off with an injury in the first half.
Moyes is attempting to integrate a host of new, young signings into the team " including three from former club Manchester United in Adnan Januzaj, Donald Love and Paddy McNair " and it may take time for them to all gel.
Sunderland piled on the pressure in the second half but Middlesbrough, back in the Premier League after a seven-year absence, held on to move to four points from a possible six.
"Not many playersin our teamhave playedmuch in the Premier League," said Middlesbrough midfielder Stewart Downing, a veteran of England's top division.
"It was a team effort."
Moyes suggested there will be more incomings at Sunderland in the final 10 days of the transfer window.
"We have so many young boys and are at thebare bones," he said.
"We are working really hard " everybody knows we are short " and we will get the players."
