Benfica makes winning start to Portuguese title defense

LISBON, Portugal (AP) " Benfica made a winning start to defense of the Portuguese league title by beating Tondela 2-0 on Saturday.

Substitute Lisandro Lopez put the visitors in front by scoring with a headed goal in the 39th minute after replacing the injured Luisao.

Nineteen-year-old Andre Horta, who joined Benfica this offseason from Setubal, added a stellar second goal in stoppage time.

Also on Saturday, Sporting Lisbon beat Maritimo 2-0 thanks to goals by Sebastian Coates and Bryan Ruiz in each half, while Pacos Ferreira drew 1-1 at Moreirense.

Porto beat Rio Ave 3-1 on Friday.
