Only minutes away from sealing victory in the shot put, Valerie Adams seemed certain to claim a third straight gold medal.
So certain, in fact, Sport New Zealand was already in celebratory mode.
With Adams leading the competition ahead of American Michelle Carter's dramatic winning throw, the national body tweeted an image appearing to congratulate the Kiwi.
But after Carter clinched gold with her final throw, Adams was consigned to silver and Sport NZ promptly issued an apology.
Apologies for our earlier Valerie post. Caught up in the moment. And so very proud of her.— Sport NZ (@SportNZ) August 13, 2016
And Sport NZ wasn't the only organisation with egg on its face during the shot put, with the NZOC also sending out an unfortunate news alert.
