Holliday breaks right thumb in Cards' 11-inning loss to Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) " The St. Louis Cardinals' playoff hopes have taken a big hit after left fielder Matt Holliday broke his right thumb on Thursday.

Holliday was hit by a 94 mph fastball in the 10th inning from reliever Mike Montgomery in St. Louis' 4-3, 11-inning loss to the Chicago Cubs.

An X-ray showed the fracture. Holliday declined to speculate if his season is over.

"Yeah for sure it's super disappointing," Holliday said, "but it's part of the sport, unfortunately."

St. Louis fell 13 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central but is a half-game out of the final wild-card spot.

"We've got some young talented players that are going to have to step up and get the job done," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "That's all there is to it. There is going to be some opportunity for them now."

Holliday, who left for a pinch-runner after being checked by the trainer, had singled and scored in the first inning. He's hitting .242 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs.
