Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd has dumped Julian Savea to the reserves for Saturday's Super Rugby quarter-final against the Sharks in Wellington.

Savea has given up his number 11 jersey to Jason Woodward, with Matt Proctor starting at centre after recovering from a hamstring strain.

Props Loni Uhila and Ben May earn their first starts of the season, with Reggie Goodes ruled out of the match with concussion.

Chris Eves and former New Zealand Maori prop Mike Kainga provide propping cover on the bench while Vince Aso returns from a calf strain as midfield back-up.
