A speedway racer was taken to hospital after a crash at the Western Springs speedway tonight.

Emergency services were called to the speedway about 7pm, where the New Zealand Midget Championship is taking place this weekend.

Event promoter Bill Buckley said the driver of an F2 midget vehicle "rode a wheel" - drove onto the wheel of another vehicle - and their vehicle flung into the air.

The vehicle barrel-rolled several times in the air.

The driver was loaded into an ambulance and taken to hospital.

Buckley said the man appeared shaken but not seriously injured.
