Dan Carter celebrated the start of 2016 with a glass of French bubbles while Sonny Bill Williams was up early this morning training.

Carter had a year to remember in 2015 after leading the All Blacks to a World Cup title with a man of the match performance in the final over Australia. A week later he was named World Rugby player of the year.

Since the tournament he has moved his family to France where he is playing for Paris side Racing 92. He tweeted an image celebrating as well as an image with his eldest son Marco from early on New Year's Eve.

Williams, who is back in New Zealand training for the All Blacks Sevens squad, tweeted an image at 6.41am of himself running with the message 'Hope everyone had a safe night last night.'.

Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo had a message of love for his fans.

All Whites and West Ham defender Winston Reid also had a message for his fans.

While tennis great Rafael Nadal celebrated with his family.
