Black Caps fast bowler Tim Southee has been ruled out of the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka with a foot injury.

Southee injured his left foot in yesterday's eight-wicket defeat at Saxton Oval and will leave the squad for further evaluation.

Matt Henry, who took eight wickets in the opening two ODIs, replaces Southee in the squad.

"Tim felt pain in his left foot early in the second innings and was forced to come off," said Black Caps coach Mike Hesson.

"We're not sure of the nature of the injury at this point and will need to find out more information over the coming days.

"Matt comes back into the squad having performed strongly in the opening two ODIs, so we know he'll join us in good form."
