Australia 33 England 13
England are out of the Rugby World Cup, kicked out of their own party by an Australian side which underlined its own credentials as a title favourite.
The 13-33 defeat deflated the 81,080 crowd which was deafening in its support for the home side right until full-time.
Both teams had chances - Australia took theirs, mostly, while England were unable to make the most of the territory and possession they secured.
First-five Bernard Foley was the key for the Wallabies; scoring two tries, converting them and adding four penalty kicks and a sideline conversion for a personal haul of 28 points.
Each time Australia ventured into enemy territory, they came away with points, while England struggled to string phases together. If they did, they ran out of ideas, dropped the ball or ran into Michael Hooper or David Pocock.
The twin opensides dominated the breakdown and England seemed powerless to stop them.
The home side, down 3-17 at halftime, managed to claw their way back to 13-20 with 15 minutes to play.
The game was sealed with a Matt Giteau try in the final minute - his try converted from the sideline - but the final dagger was when Owen Farrell was yellow carded with 10 minutes left.
Foley nailed the penalty and all hope of a comeback extinguished, the English supporters started to leave.
For the first time, Waltzing Matilda drowned out Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.
The Wallabies now play Wales to determine who will top the Pool of Death, while England will wonder how it went so wrong.
