DUNEDIN, New Zealand (AP) Darren Bravo reached his fifth test century to stand between New Zealand and speedy victory over the West Indies on the fourth day of the third test Friday at the University Oval.
Bravo was 104 not out with Narsingh Deonarine on 26 as the West Indies went to lunch at 235-4, still trailing New Zealand by 161 runs after following on 396 behind.
New Zealand claimed two wickets early in the opening session Friday, dismissing Marlon Samuels for 23 and claiming the crucial wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul (1) who top-scored with 76 in the West Indies' first innings of 213 in reply to New Zealand's 609-9 declared.
Bravo and Deonarine added 50 for the fifth wicket as the West Indies look to avoid going 1-0 down in the three-test series.
Bravo made 40 in the first innings but was the first man out on the second day as the West Innings' reply to New Zealand's commanding total rapidly unraveled.
He showed much more resilience Friday, curbing his usual aggressive approach while still striking 15 fours in a century that came from 200 balls in 286 minutes. He entered the 90s with a four from Neil Wagner and didn't pause long on his way to a century, hitting another four from Wagner to go to 94, taking a two, then moving to 100 with a four off offpinner Ish Sodhi.
Bravo watched this morning as his team suffered two quick setbacks, stumbling from its overnight total of 168-2 to 185-4.
Samuels was out in the third over of the day, caught and bowled by Tim Southee to give Southee his first wicket of the innings and his fifth of the match.
Chanderpaul was on 1 when he was trapped lbw by Wagner in the eighth over of the day, the second bowled Friday by the South African-born paceman who didn't take a wicket in the first innings.
Bravo and Deonarine carried the West Indies through 21 overs until lunch without further loss but the second new ball was only two overs away at the break.
