New Zealand's three-day match at Derbyshire is meeting its warm-up obligations on the England cricket tour.

The second day saw a competitive pace bowling duel between Neil Wagner and Doug Bracewell as the latter vies to win back his test place. Bruce Martin's spin also showed promise on what had been a pitch unresponsive to turn until he took the ball. Each helped dismiss Derbyshire for 154.

Apart from Kane Williamson's 49, the top order again struggled in the visitors second innings. New Zealand''s 199 for five was bolstered by an unbeaten sixth wicket partnership of 105 between B-J Watling (61) and Tom Latham (47). Watling and Latham will resume tonight with New Zealand's lead 334. Watling backed up his 77 not out (also the team's top score) in the first innings.

Openers Peter Fulton and Hamish Rutherford went cheaply, leaving New Zealand nine for two. Dean Brownlie and Martin Guptill could not capitalise on second chances either - both were dismissed for eight.

Earlier Neil Wagner added two early caught behinds to the dismissal he took on the first evening, reinforcing his claim to a test spot after a strong England series at home. He finished with three for 33 from nine overs.

Doug Bracewell's determination matched Wagner's initial venom, securing the team's best figures of four for 28 from 15. His pace and strength shone. With Tim Southee and Trent Boult appearing certain test selections, it keeps alive the option of New Zealand using four form pace bowlers at Lord's. However, Martin presented an argument for retention with three for 13 from 11. Mark Gillespie went wicketless from 17 overs.

Only one Derbyshire batsman made more than 16 - No 4 Wes Durston counter-attacked his way to 46 after being dropped in the gully on six.
