Andrew Nicholson's quest for a grand slam has got off to a great start at Lexington, Kentucky.

After the opening round of dressage, Nicholson leads on board Calico Joe.

Nicholson says he's in a good position with his second more favoured horse, Quimbo, still to come in the dressage tomorrow.

"We're off to a very good start. Calico Joe did his job very well and I didn't really expect him to perform any better than what he did and I'm looking forward to tomorrow with Quimbo and then onto the jumping after that.''

However he says most of the top horses will be in action in the second round of dressage tomorrow.

"It wasn't that strong a bunch today, there's a few good ones tomorrow. Today's bunch weren't overly smart, as much as I'd like to say they were.''

After winning Burley last year, Nicholson stands to win $350,000 if he can win at Lexington and then Badminton.
