Spanish cyclist killed in accident

Victor Cabedo, a 23-year-old Spanish cyclist with the Euskaltel-Euskadi team, has died after being hit by a car during a training run in the eastern village of Almedijar, a police source has revealed.

"There was a collision between a cyclist and a car. The cyclist has died,'' the source told AFP.

Cabedo, who hailed from the nearby town of Onda, had made his professional cycling debut last year and had been riding with the Euskaltel-Euskadi team of Basque star Samuel Sanchez.

He finished ninth in the Spanish national road championships in 2011, and won the fourth stage of the Tour of Asturias.

He started the Tour of Britain earlier this month but withdrew before the completion of the race.

According to those close to Cabedo, he had been set to participate in Italy later this month in the Tour of Piedmont and the Tour of Lombardy.
