Cricket: Illness rips through Black Caps camp

A stomach bug has ripped through the Black Caps camp, hampering their efforts in a nine run World Twenty20 warm up loss to South Africa in Colombo.

Tim Southee and Daniel Vettori remained at the hotel with bowling coach Damien Wright having to take to the field as a substitute fielder.

Captain Ross Taylor slammed 75 from 42 balls as New Zealand posted 177 for 8 in reply to South Africa's 186 for 6.

"We had a few illnesses leading into the match, so only having 11 there, but the whole squad's had a game so far in the last couple of weeks, but looking forward to the start of the World Cup,"' Taylor said.

Brendon McCullum batted but his right elbow injury prevented him from wicketkeeping.

The tournament kicks off tonight with hosts Sri Lanka playing Zimbabwe.
