Marina Erakovic's ambition to make a dent on an Olympic Games programme will have to wait another four years.
The New Zealander was bundled out with indecent haste in her first round match by Canadian Alex Wozniak 6-2 6-1. The match lasted just 1h 3min with Erakovic unable to get a toehold in the contest.
She didn't convert any of four break point chances, managed to get just 41 percent of her first serves in and it all added up to a depressing day for the world No 46.
She'd been shattered by her rain-marred first round defeat in Bejing, had hoped to make the most of this opportunity at a place she likes, but it wasn't her day.
"I didn't have a chance to get into it at any point in the short time I was out there," she said.
"It's really disappointing."
The prime reason was not so much that Wozniak, ranked eight places lower, is a player she's previously beaten, and on grass. More relevant was the venue and occasion.
"This only happens every four years and will never happen at Wimbledon again."
Wozniak plays at a fast pace and can be tough to stop if she gets on a roll, the 24-year-old Erakovic added.
"I tried to throw in a few junk balls, and slices but it just didn't work. I tried to take my time but it went really fast. I came out against a player who was ripping some great shots and I just wasn't up to par today."
Erakovic plans to head home shortly. She hasn't been home since mid-April.
But, form permitting, this won't be her last Olympics. She loves the experience, believes it will become almost akin to a grand slam in time and wants to be back.
"This is a very special event and everyone is really keen to play it."
