Jimmy Choux may not have capped his remarkable year in last night's $3.3 million Hong Kong Mile but it was still a New Zealand victory.
Veteran galloper Able One, bred at Cambridge Stud, caused a huge upset in the great race, winning at odds of 65-1 in the hands of Jeff Lloyd.
A two-time Karaka sales purchase, having gone through the ring as a yearling and then the Horse In Training sale, Able One (Cape Cross-Gardenia) has overcome three serious leg injuries in his career in Hong Kong.
But most Kiwi eyes were on Telecom NZ Derby winner Jimmy Choux, who looked a huge winning chance at the top of the straight after tracking the winner three back on the fence.
The John Bary-trained entire raced up to second at the 400m mark but soon peaked on his run to fade to eighth, only a half length from fifth.
Earlier on the night Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden provided Australian jockey Craig Williams with a massive consolation prize in the Hong Kong Vase.
Williams was forced to miss the Melbourne Cup ride on the French superstar because of suspension but rode the perfect race to claim last night's group one 2400m event.
"I just love this horse and what he did tonight raised the hairs on the back of my neck," said Williams.
The Hong Kong Sprint was taken out by local Lucky Nine in the hands of Brett Prebble.
The favourite Rocket Man dropped out after being handy to the turn.
