Australian Richard Fromberg has withdrawn from next week's Auckland Open men's tennis tournament after breaking his wrist.
Fromberg, the beaten finalist in the Heineken Open last year, broke his wrist while riding a bike on the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne earlier this week.
He was beaten in the final last year by Chilean world No 2 Marcelo Rios, who, after much speculation over a quadricep muscle problem in his right thigh, is now due to arrive in Auckland on Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, American Jim Courier's unimpressive first-round loss in the Australian hardcourt championships in Adelaide yesterday is putting pressure on organisers of next week's Auckland tournament to rethink their choice of wildcards.
Organisers have said they will award Courier a wildcard, which means New Zealanders Alistair Hunt or Mark Nielsen will miss out.
Both players, and compatriot Brett Steven, were first-round winners in the event last year. - NZPA
