Runners who like rugby are going to have to make a tough choice between the two, after a clash between the Auckland Marathon and Rugby World Cup final has gone unresolved.
Both events are scheduled for the early hours of November 1, meaning those who complete the full 42km race will be running while the game is on.
The ASB Auckland Marathon Event Team said today it had put "much effort into exploring various alternatives with the associated authorities".
However, "they were unable to support these due to the impact on traffic levels, particularly on the Auckland Harbour Bridge".
The Herald understands very few dates were available to organisers - the weekend after is the V8 Supercars at Pukekohe, for example.
It is believed the team was offered the previous weekend, Labour Day, but turned it down because it clashes with the rugby semi-finals and sponsors were not supportive.
In a statement, organisers said they had instead put their energies into ensuring the event would be a fantastic experience, and had worked with Sky Television to put a big screen at the start line in Devonport if New Zealand was in the final.
Those doing the half marathon, which starts at 6.50am, should be able to watch the entire final before the race, the team said.
"For marathoners, we plan on keeping you updated throughout your time on the course." The marathon starts at 6am.
"We're celebrating this special event in true rugby style. Become an active supporter of the All Blacks and dedicate your run in support of their quest for victory," a message to potential entrants said.
"Don't miss your opportunity to be part of the iconic ASB Auckland Marathon during a memorable year."
