SANZAR has given a team from Argentina the green light to join Super Rugby from 2016.

The executive committee meeting in Sydney has decided a sixth team from South Africa and an Argentine team be included in a preferred 17 team model to be presented to the national unions for approval.

Super Rugby's last expansion came in 2011 when the Melbourne Rebels became the fifth Australian franchise and the competition format was changed to three conferences.

The South African Rugby Union have been pushing for a six franchise for a number of years but have had to settle for a promotion-relegation match for the last two seasons to decide the fifth side.

Argentine rugby journalist Frankie Deges is delighted and said the travel is just something they have to live with.

Deges said they are far away from everywhere and the nearest they have is 10 hours to Johannesburg so they have to put up with it.

If the national unions approve the model it will be presented to broadcasters later this year.
