Where Gareth Anscombe now goes, the Blues should go.
The most instructive moment of the latest Blues' horror show against the Sharks was the sight of the 20-year-old first five-eighths barking out orders to the huddle when they were double-figure digits down in the first half.
There was shades of Grant Fox about the way he was seizing control of the moment.
That's not to suggest Anscombe is Fox. He doesn't have the authority, the unshakeable faith in himself and those around him to do the right thing at the right time, but Anscombe in that moment marked himself as a leader.
He's not even the most talented young five-eighth in the country, but he's not far off and the Blues are hardly in a position to look a gift-horse in the mouth in this fragile state of disintegration.
Aaron Cruden, Beauden Barrett and, arguably, Lima Sopoaga look more physically advanced, more capable of playing on the advantage line and more likely to create space on their feet or through their hands.
Anscombe is almost a throwback No 10 - a pocket player who looks a little out of his comfort zone when the game opens up.
Imperfections and all, he's the perfect for a team that needs to start from scratch.
He wants the job. That much is obvious, even without his exhortations to his troops.
He wants to make the key decisions at the game's crucial moments. He looks like the sort of player who dreams of scenarios that involve him taking tricky penalties with his side two points down and time up on the clock.
So it is hard to fathom why the Blues have been reluctant to promote him too far too fast.
At times they have preferred the experience and solidity of Michael Hobbs and Piri Weepu (perhaps solidity is the wrong adjective to use for the latter at present).
With the Blues 2012 campaign resembling roadkill, it is up to Pat Lam and Bryce Woodward to future-proof the franchise.
Handing the No 10 jersey to Anscombe for the remainder of the competition would be a start.
There'll be mishaps along the way, but they'll be put in a knowledge bank this team can draw down on for years to come.
