The Queen will celebrate her 87th birthday privately today, Buckingham Palace says.

This year she will mark the 60th anniversary of her coronation on June 2 and her third great-grandchild is expected in mid-July to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

A palace spokeswoman said the Queen would celebrate her birthday privately. Traditional gun salutes will be held tomorrow across Britain.

Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, the great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, was born at 2.40am on April 21, 1926, at the Mayfair home of her mother's parents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore.
