Rotorua will wake up to chilly mornings this week as a southerly moves through the country and central North Island.
The cold temperatures come as weather observations show April had almost three times as much rain as normal, following on from a wet February and March.
Andy Best, MetService meteorologist, said tonight would be cold and tomorrow morning people could wake up to frost, with temperatures plunging to 3C.
"It'll be cold, clear and crisp."
Mr Best said tomorrow be fine, but that would change later in the week.
"Wednesday will have cloud developing and patchy drizzle developing later in the day. Thursday will bring periods of rain developing."
Thursday and Friday evenings would be cold, with temperatures set to drop to 5C on Thursday and 3C on Friday, with possible frost on Friday morning.
Those with outdoor weekend plans - including those lining up for the Rotorua Marathon -
shouldn't be worried as Saturday would be a nice day, Mr Best said.
Brian Holden, from Springfield Weather Observations, said the amount of rain he measured in April, at 327.6mm, was almost three times the normal amount for the month in Rotorua.
"It was a pretty wet month."
He said March had three times the normal amount of rain, with February about double the amount.
