What: Rotorua District Choir
When: Saturday, Sunday
Where: St Lukes Church
Here was a carol concert which mixed the familiar and the novel, one which succeeded well for it was both musically refreshing and conveyed the Christmas feelings of goodwill and ardour.
Conductor Evelyn Falconer had put together an appealing programme in a variety of styles and their skilful arrangements and her stimulating direction let the singers bring out splendid choral sounds.
The 'Ukranian Bell Carol' was a fine opener, with bell-like tones from the stronger than usual choir giving the piece a strong resonance and splendour.
The concert was billed as 'Goin' to Bethlehem', which was in fact one of the items in the programme, written in a Spiritual style, and its catchy rhythms helped to make it a highlight
Two young soloists, Nadia Cooper and Tate Tisdall, gave a charming tenderness to their two carols.
The choral works of the American composer Morten Lauridsen are noted for their radiance and spiritual depth, and this was borne out magnificently in the 'O Magnum Mysterium' and 'O Nata Lux'.
Evelyn Falconer pure voice and expressive colours made the two carols she performed herself a delight.
'Angel Melody', a compilation of traditional carols, was as rich and delicious as a Christmas cake. Alison Zanelli's well-judged piano accompaniment gave the singers vital support, especially in complex passages.
