Western Heights High Schools girls' 1st XI have narrowly missed out on playing in the final of the Maurice Hulme Secondary Schools football tournament being hosted at Rotorua International Stadium this week.
After finishing second in Pool C, behind St Mary's from Auckland, Western Heights beat Pool A winners Pukekohe High School 1-0 in the quarter final, then took on Botany Downs in the semi final.
The teams could not be separated at the end of normal time, having scored a goal each, and a penalty shoot-out had a 3-3 scoreline. Sudden death football then decided who would go through to the final with Botany Downs scoring the decisive goal.
In the other semi final St Mary's beat Avondale 1-0.
Botany Downs will met St Mary's in today's final at 11.45am with the third and fourth playoff game between Western Heights and Avondale at 10.15am.
