Attention will turn from the classroom to the boxing ring at Selwyn Primary School, as Rotorua's Central Boxing Club host their annual boxing event.

Fighters from across the North Island will take part in the boxing event tomorrow being staged at Selwyn School. The event is held early in the boxing season and features a lot of novice fighters who are just starting out.

Central Boxing Club owner and coach Rex Jenkins said they would have about 50 fighters taking part.

"We usually hold one of the first events of the season," he said. "That is why we get quite a few novice fighters but we also get a few experienced guys as well."

He said fighters would be competing in different weight divisions and age groups including cadets (under-14), juniors (under-17), youth (17 and 18) and elite.

Jenkins said it was good to see young fighters getting involved in the sport.

He encouraged people to come and watch tomorrow with fights starting from 1pm and going until 6pm.

Entry for adults $10 and school children $5.
