I am excited to check out Rotorua's new look library - part of the brand new Te Aka Mauri which officially opened yesterday.
You see, I am a library-lover.
Some may argue libraries are going out of fashion, as the younger generation move from old-fashioned books to getting their reading material on a screen.
But for me, there is nothing like the feel of a library. I can happily while away time wandering among the shelves, picking up a book, putting it down, picking up another one. Flicking through it, for me the size of the font is the deciding factor - too big or small, it goes back on the shelf now matter how enticing the blurb!
The temporary library on Pukuatua St did its job, but it will be nice to return to the Haupapa St building and see how things have changed.
The big change, of course, is that the building is now shared with a range of Lakes District Health board children's health services.
It's a combination some have questioned but I don't see an issue with it.
The concept is an innovative move, which Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick has called a New Zealand first.
Former New Zealander of the Year Dr Lance O'Sullivan said yesterday Rotorua was showing "significant leadership to the country, and the country will be watching".
And the region's political rivals were united in their praise, with National's Todd McClay, Labour's Tamati Coffey and NZ First's Fletcher Tabuteau all in favour of the concept and the effect it will have on the people of the city.
Today, you finally have the chance to check it out for yourselves, as well as hear talks by Dr O'Sullivan and Dr Johan Morreau that are sure to be worth a listen.
Check out the open day details on page 3 of the Rotorua Daily Post and keep an eye on the Rotorua Daily Post website for coverage from the event.
