Your Story: Soccer success

The Rotorua Fiji Indian community is celebrating their magniificiant win from the weekends "Battle of the giants Soccer tournment " organized by the Waikato Bay of Plenty Fiji Football Association at Gower Park Hamilton on the 9th and 10th of February.

The win has not only done the Indo fijian community proud but Rotorua at large as well.

The Roto-Viti Soccer Team won the Battle of the giants Soccer tournment against Lautoka by 3 goals to nil in Hamilton last weekend.


It was a moment of joy and fun for soccer lovers, players and organisers as the team won the championship title for the 1st time after several upsetting losses in semi finals and all.


The Roto-Viti players made quick moves and scored two goals in first half against the Lautoka Team.


The account for the Roto-Viti Team was opened by Captian Munen Nair, followed by optunist penality kick by Praneel Nair, leaving the score bored hanging at 2-0 in the 1st half.

The penality kick came by after fowl play by the keeper of the Lautoka Team on the Roto-Viti midfeild player Dipesh kumar who has been accredited for being the goal placer for all the 3 goals.


The final goal was scored by the youngest player of the team Rikshent Prasad. Coach, Narayan Reddy said, "The Roto-Viti Soccer Team is a family-orientated team. We have players from 17 years of age to late 40s. We are a self-financing team and do not have any sponsors to date," he said.


Reddy said the secret of the team's success was discipline, dedication, determination and pride.


"There are no stars in this team but together we make a star team. All players are treated equally. Win or lose, we stick together and this closeness makes us very strong. "


Captain Munen Nair said" it was a tough battle against the Nadi team in the semi finals , since they had experienced players.However, they turned out victorious by winning 5-3 in the penality shoot outs.


"We did our best. Our young side played well in the tournament . The Lions will be ready for the next battle ," he said.


The Roto-Viti has already started their preparation for the upcoming IDC Soccer tournment that is scheduled for March, 2013
