A local woman is hosting her first Pink Ribbon Breakfast event to raise funds for breast cancer.
Emma Skews will be holding the event at her home on Saturday May 20 from 10am to 1pm.
She says she has already filled up her 30 seats but people who still wish to make a contribution can donate online.
Although it is a breakfast event, the food will be more like that at a party and there will be the theme of pink, she says.
The food will include pink cupcakes, pink pikelets with whipped cream, pink fairy bread and sausage rolls.
Emma says there will also be some games, such as 'Guess the Jellybeans', and raffle tickets.
The raffles include prizes from Avon and Brew Craft Beer Pub.
People will also be able to enjoy having their nails painted.
She says she already does street collecting for the Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand every year and as an Avon representative they did a lot of work with the foundation too.
Two of her friends have battled breast cancer, which is another reason she decided to host the breakfast.
One of them - Cushla Tahana - will be speaking to those attending the event, she says.
"I had never given it a go, so I thought I would."
She says the Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand is a great cause to support because of all the things they do.
Money raised goes to research around breast cancer and the foundation also supports the families who have to deal with a loved one having it, she says.
"I think it's a great cause because it affects so many people in so many different ways."
She thinks it is especially good having that support for the men, as she thinks they can feel quite helpless and not know how to deal with it.
Her breakfast event was a gold coin entry and she is hoping that combined with raffle tickets the breakfast will raise $300 or more.
She says many people have contributed to the event, including Pauline Gill and Chelsea Monkley from Girl Guides Putaruru who have donated the chairs, and Denise Pullen-Burry from the Jelly Belly Store at Skyline who donated 3kgs or pink jellybeans.
Avon representative and leader Hannah Horner also donated a heap of Avon products for the raffles, she says.
"It's awesome to see the support everyone is willing to give."
She says she is looking to hold another Pink Ribbon Breakfast event next year.
