Two of Rotorua's staple establishments will be judged among the best after being named finalists in the 2016 Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence.

Sport of Kings Motel and Skyline Rotorua found out they were finalists today. Skyline is up for Excellence in Host Responsibility while Sport of Kings Motel is a finalist in two categories, Host of the Year and Best Accommodation (30 rooms and under).

"We were so very excited, the first thing we did was put it up on Facebook, and of course told the staff," laughed Sport of Kings Motel manager Tristen Williams.

"We have such a great team so we were stoked to be recognised like this. It's also great for Rotorua, putting the city in the spotlight."

Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Vicki Lee said the calibre of finalists were excellent.

"The awards have been designed to cover all aspects of the hospitality and commercial accommodation sector from the bricks and mortar of some of the best establishments in the industry, through to the level of service they offer and how they train and develop their staff.

"The finalists in this year's Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence reflect extremely high levels of professionalism and these awards are a chance for the industry to take a moment to pat themselves on the back for a job well done," she said.

"With more than 3000 members, the awards finalists are spread from one end of the country to the other and this is reflective of the value the industry brings to every region in the form of jobs and money injected into the local economy.

"It also means no two finalists are alike, with some drawing heavily from the domestic and international visitor markets, while others play a vital role domestically often as the community hubs of local communities."

Entrants in the Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence are judged over an eight-week period by a panel of independent industry professionals, who assess every competitor on a range of commercial and operational criteria.

All entrants in the awards also receive feedback from the judges designed to help them in their future business development.

Winners will be announced at the organisation's national conference being held in Auckland on October 13.
